　２００４年は、ジンバブエ野球チームの歴史において、刺激となる年でした。それは夢の実現でした。ジンバブエ野球協会が、日本人コーチを初めてジンバブエに受け入れた９０年代の初期から、日本式の野球は、ジンバブエの意図と合致するとの、確信がありました。全員が真剣になって野球に取り組み、日本人の知識と文化を得ようとしました。その後、多くのコーチがジンバブエにやってきましたが、プレーヤーの多くは、野球を完全に理解するのは、依然として非常に難しいと感じていました。ジンバブエ野球会および関係諸氏のお蔭で、２００３年に選手とコーチを派遣し、一ヶ月間、関学チームに帯同することができました。そこでの経験により、野球や諸事に対する態度に積極性がでてきました。その結果、先般のオールアフリカ大会においては、銅メダルを獲得しました。同大会においては、２人の選手の特筆すべき活躍がありました。

　２００４年１１月２日から１１日まで、選手14名と監督・コーチ陣５名が日本に滞在し、関学チームと３試合、青学チームと１試合を行ないました。各校とも、それぞれの記念行事の一つとして、アフリカからのチームを迎えてくれました。最初の２試合は、高等部チームと大学チームを相手に対戦し、それぞれ１３－３のスコアーで敗退し、ショックを受けました。ジンバブエチームのプレイは、高等部チ―ムとの対戦のときは、気後れして普段の力が発揮されていませんでした。それでも、２戦目はだいぶよくなり、３戦目となるオール関学との試合も、５対２でしたが、我々のチームとしてはこの試合も上出来でした。その試合での唯一のホームランも我々のチームが打ちました。４戦目となった東京での試合も、１１対０で負けましたが、同様のことが言えます。チームは良くなりつつありますが、国際的なスタンダードからすれば、何でもない場面でのエラーが多すぎます。コーチの目からは、打撃陣は結果をだしているが、残念なことに、投手陣に層の厚さがありませんでした。怪我のため、チーム編成にも影響がでました。特に、２戦目、３戦目です。ベンチは、選手数が少なくなって、野球ができないような状態でした。技術的には、チームは全戦全敗でしたが、もし１試合でも勝っていれば、さらに良いプレイをすることができたと思います。技術的には、防ぐことができたであろう判断ミス（一番多かった）やエラーを除けば、期待以上のものを発揮してくれました。明白なことは、このチームには、チームの一員として、そしてプレイで、よい結果をどんどん出すことが求められているということです。最も重要なことは、多くの選手が、日本式の野球を目にし実践してきたことです。国内の主な３つの地域を代表するチーム同士が、ジンバブエ国内で対戦することで必ずや上達し、それにより、想像だけに頼っていたこれまでのやり方から解放されて、コーチ陣の苦労も幾分緩和されることになるでしょう。

　今回の訪日は、非常に勉強になり、真の意味で実り多い文化交流でした。とりわけ、歓待は素晴らしいものでした。申し分のない段取り、食事、宿泊でした。

　ジンバブエ野球協会は、両大学の主催者、ジンバブエ野球会のメンバー、選手、コーチ、監督、技術指導者、高校野球連盟、各種メディア、観戦頂いた皆さん、その他多くの方々に心から感謝の意を表するものです。

ZIMBABWE BASEBALL 2004 JAPAN TOUR

2004 was yet another exciting year in the History of the Zimbabwe baseball. This came as a dream come true. Since the early nineties when ZBSA received the first Japanese Coach in the country and continent, it was certain that the Japanese type of game was the one ideal for the Zimbabwean program. It was everyone, who was serious about the game to have a similar knowledge and culture like the Japanese. Though many coaches came into Zimbabwe, still it had been very difficult for many players to understand wholly the game. Thanks to Zimbabwe Yakyu-Kai and it its associates that it was possible to send to players and coach in 2003 attached to Kwansei University team for a month. This had a positive change in approach to the game and the overall attitude. As a result the team got a bronze medal at the All Africa Games, with the two players playing a very significant role during the games. 

From the November 2 to 11, 2004, a team of 14 players and 5 officials was in Japan, playing some games 3 in Kwansei Institution and 1in Aoyama universities. Both institutions hosted the African team as a result of the 150th and 130th Anniversaries respectively. The first two game of score of 13 - 3 per game against High school and the University, with the hosts winning were eye openers. The Zimbabwean team played below its standard against the High school mainly because of what seemed as a stage fright but playing much better in following game. The 3rd game against the All Kwansei 0f 5-2 was another outstanding performance by the visitors the only home run of the game coming from the visitors. The same could be said for the fourth game in Tokyo with an 11-0 loss. Though the team seemed to have been improving from another errors (unforced) were quite many by international standard. From the coaching side the batting line up was getting the results it all needed. There was no depth in the pitching, which was a let down. Injuries also did hit the team especially in the 2nd and 3rd games. The bench was crippled as result of the small squad, which had traveled. From the technical side, though the team lost all games it could have done a lot better if it had won one. Over and above the team did far more than the technical had anticipated despite all the mistakes (mainly) and errors which could have been reduced.

What was evident is that the team needs to be increased for better results both on the board and in performance.

The most important thing is that quite a number of players have seen and practiced the Japanese type of ball game. Considering that the 3 main provinces were represented in team some improvement will certainly come into the game of baseball in Zimbabwe. This will make the coaches tasks a bit easier as the will no longer only rely on imaginary plays and situation unlike before.

The whole trip was a very educative a true cultural exchange at its highest. The hospitality was a cut above the rest. The organizing was excellent and so was the food and accommodation. 

It will very amiss if the Zimbabwe baseball and Softball Association does not salute the organizers of both Universities, Zimbabwe Yakyu-Kai members, players, coaches, managers, technical officials, the High School Association, the various media groups, spectators and many others.
